A short, flashy wedding montage or video highlights package can look impressive, but as time passes it will become ever more important to have a longer, more comprehensive record of your family and friends. The BBC have been keeping me really busy recently. Much of what I have been doing was broadcast live on BBC Breakfast News form various locations including ABI at Beverley and election footage from Bradford and Wakefield. I have also shot a 2 minute piece for the Sunday Politics Show and a lengthy piece with the playwright John Godber that might be shown later in the year. Throw in a few stories for BBC Look North, football for Sky Sports etc. and I have been very, very busy

OK, so it is time to get back to weddings with a trip to Slayley Hall in Northumberland this weekend, a great venue and one from which I am expecting some stunning footage (if the weather co-operates). I have ‘pimped up’ my smaller cameras and am really beginning to enjoy throwing them around and getting shots that simply would not be possible with the big shoulder mounted cameras I use for the broadcasters. For the last wedding at Beverley Minster and Rowley Manor the big cameras stayed in the car boot – everything was shot on the small, unobtrusive Sony NX70′s and it looks great!

Fantastic wedding fayre at The Deep last thursday – really busy – but I suspect the venue will be a bit of a nightmare for photographers as they are not allowed to use flash because it startles the fish.  Personally, I would really look forward to filming in such a unique venue with some very different backdrops.

I also signed up as a recommended contractor at Sarah Beeney’s place, Rise Hall in Holderness. Many of us watched the restoration on TV and I have to say they have done a great job and created a stunning venue in an area that really needed one. I cannot imagine it being cheap to hire Rise Hall but then the best things never are!

I had my first enquiry for a 3D wedding video today but I fear my advice was not well received. The current crop of 3D video cameras are basically unsuitable for wedding videography. The cheaper cameras from the major manufacturers do not even have a proper viewfinder and the operator has to rely on the flip out LCD screen to see what he is doing. On a sunny day he will be shooting ‘blind’, not exactly conducive to quality footage.

The more expensive cameras (£15,000 plus) are obviously better but there are more parameters that need to be set (convergence) making them more cumbersome and slower in their operation than the equivalent 2D cameras. This is fine when shooting from static positions but in ‘run and gun’ situations (like weddings) you have to be fast to get the best shots. With the current crop of 3D cameras the inescapable fact is that many good shots will be missed altogether and others will be unusable because there was not time to set up the camera properly.

OK, so the poor quality footage will be in 3D but personally, until I can watch it without balancing a second pair of glasses on my nose, I am not interested.

Storytelling technique remains the single most important factor in film making. Experienced professionals will always have the right tools for the job but for wedding videography that does not include a 3D camera………yet!

I do not think I will be getting the job!

I shot Hull City v Bristol City for Sky Sports on Saturday. A great 3-0 win for the tigers and it is good to see Nick Barmby doing well in his new role as manager. I have interviewed Nick many times now and he is always good humoured, friendly and thoroughly professional, a lot more than can be said of his predecessor and many others I have to deal with. I am at a wedding fair at Cave Castle this coming sunday so come along and see me.

Busy times at present. My new cameras continue to impress and have got some fantastic footage of body builders modelling a new range of sports clothing (watch out for it under the brand name of Raw Strength). After the shoot the body builders did not want paying – they wanted the clothes!

Tomorrow I will be shooting for the Tigers Trust ( Hull City, not wildlife ) and on Sunday it is a dance show at Bridlington Spa. Somewhere along the line I need to do some editing.

Just got back from the City having shot an interview with Gary Baker, head of European Equity Strategy at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The bankers are taking some real flack at the moment but this chap was very friendly which is more than can be said about the bank’s security guards. Still, I suppose there is a very real threat out there and they have to be tough, even if it is their own fault that the pass card they gave me did not work!

The job was a green screen interview with autocue and was shot for an American TV company with my new favourite toy, the Sony NX70. The full HD images look absolutely stunning for such a small camera and I was not even shooting at the maximum resolution

I have just bought 2 Sony HXR NX70 (full 1920 x 1080 HD) camcorders and must say that they are exceeding my expectations by a long way. The problem with most HD camcorders used for wedding videography is poor performance in low light (dimly lit churches and discos) but these little beasts employ new technology to overcome this. The pictures these cameras recently delivered from a dimly lit disco are every bit as sharp and colourful as the footage from my broadcast cameras and I am looking forward to taking advantage of the new creative opportunities that these cameras can give. The NX70 does not offer the same level of manual control available on my bigger broadcast cameras but they are more discreet, have a good wide angle lens and an excellent ‘steadyshot’ function which will enable me to incorporate more camera movement in my footage. These little cameras are not perfect but used to their strengths they do represent a huge leap forward in performance and I am absolutely delighted to have them in my armoury for the coming year.

Philip Wilson is a freelance television cameraman and video producer with experience working for BBC,YTV, Sky Sports and a host of high profile corporate clients. He also just happens to enjoy making some of the very best wedding videos you will see.

We believe that claims to deliver ‘broadcast quality’ should relate to far more than the number of pixels in the picture. It is about creativity, technical competence, experience and professionalism. The ability to ‘tell a story’ is the key to good wedding videography and it is a skill that comes naturally to a broadcast news cameraman.

In recognition of his past work as the Institute of Videography VideoSkills tutor and Qualification Assessor, Phil was awarded Life Fellowship of the Institute of Videography (the highest level of membership possible).
